Artist Statement

Hannah Duncan manifests their vision’s into a reality. They are interested in the interconnectedness of the world we live in, and are intrigued by coincidences.

Hannah’s painting practice begins with constructing a wood frame surface. They have a developed understanding of material from their ten years working as a carpenter in the construction trades. Duncan’s painting’s are invitations for the spectator to enter into new ways of seeing. 

Duncan continues to examine the distinction between natural and artificial light. Specifically, how different forms of light make contact with surfaces. How the quality of light will affect the outcome of our perception of a space, or a scene. Their fascination of light continues to play a large role in Hannah’s home, studio, and art practice. 

Hannah is constantly investigating how to transform the spaces around them. Themes Duncan enjoys playing with and returning to are the galactic, spiritual, fantasy, and mundane. Their belief is that colour is a tool and should be used to invoke feeling. Hannah explore’s how colours can communicate with one another.

Hannah is influenced by film, photography, and design. They rely on tangible objects, and forms to guide their work.
