Artist Statement

I am capable of manifesting my visions into a reality. I am interested in the interconnectedness of the world we live in. I am intrigued by coincidences. I draw inspiration from personal experiences, and places I have been.

In my painting practice my process begins with constructing a unique wood frame surface. I have a developed understanding of material from my ten years working as a carpenter in the construction trades. The paintings I make are invitations for the spectator to enter into new ways of seeing. Displaying the paintings as three dimensional objects gives them new life, and offers an advanced interpretation.

In my practice I am concerned with how light makes contact with planar surfaces. There is a distinction between light that we perceive by the sun compared to artificial light sources. Light may appear stark, varying in levels of diffusion. The contact of light to object is interpreted differently depending on; one’s eye sight, or one's perspective. Light is very important to me. In my home, in my workplace, and in my practice.

I am in constant investigation of how to transform a space. This work is being done wether I am working in sculpture, or paint. My practice offers an escape for the viewer, and is intended to create new pathways of diverging thought that may (or may not) lead to conclusions.

I use paint to capture a snapshot in time in a new realm. I envision scenarios in my head and let them play out in my work. When I paint I am constructing a two dimensional version of a three dimensional space. The two dimensional painting may offer a convincing argument but it is not real, it is just a story.

Themes I enjoy to play with and return to are the galactic, spiritual, fantasy, and mundane. My belief is that colour is a tool and should be used to invoke feeling. I explore how colours can communicate with one another on the canvas in the form of pigment, and in the form of light. I am influenced by film, photography, and design. I rely on tangible objects, and forms to guide my work.
